Week 2: Discovering Your Organising Style

8 min read

You did it - what a monster decluttering session! This week, we get to slow down and turn inward. It's time to discover your personal organisation style and create a clear vision for how you want your space to feel.

About This Week

Before we put anything back together, or purchase ANY organisation products, we’re going to spend some time getting clear on what will work for you.

I’m bringing two of my favourite methods together for getting clear - Creating the Vision (with journaling prompts) and Finding Your Own Style (with Cas from Clutterbug).

For best results, it’s important to place a small amount of attention each day into this phase of the project. All you need is to set aside 10-15 minutes a day.

And remember that notepad and pen from Week 1? Now is a good time to leave it out somewhere handy (like your coffee table). You’ll want to jot down any ideas, aha moments, or recognitions that pop into your mind.

We’ll also have a 1:1 check-in call (up to one hour) where you can share your insights, resistance, questions, or anything that’s coming up for you along the way.

Creating the Vision

When creating the vision for your space, it’s not just the aesthetics that matter.

A clear emotional vision helps define your north star, so it’s important to think about how you want this space to make you feel.

Do you want a home that makes you feel empowered - as though you’re truly in charge of your environment?

Or maybe you just want everything to feel easy and simple (by far the most popular choice).

Perhaps you’re creating a space that is effortless and never needs much ado.

Why does the feeling matter?

When we get clear on the feeling first, it sets the target.

Then, in the quiet moments of contemplation, the “how” tends to arise.

You’ll find that ideas and solutions surface naturally, as your own inner wisdom shows you the way.

Your Daily Visioning Practice

Here’s what your 10-15 minutes might look like each day:

1. Find a quiet moment. This works beautifully with your morning coffee or tea, but any time you can be still and uninterrupted will do.

2. Sit in or near your space. If possible, spend a few minutes simply being in the room you’re transforming. Notice how it feels now, and let your mind wander to how you’d like it to feel.

3. Write freely. Don’t overthink it. Let your pen move and see what comes out. You might be surprised by what surfaces.

Journaling Prompts to Try

If you’re not sure where to start, you can try one of these prompts each day:

  • “When I walk into this space, I currently feel…”
  • “But when I walk into this space, I want to feel…”
  • “This room will support me (or my family) by…”
  • “What does ‘easy’ look like for me (or my family) in this space?”
  • “If this room could speak, what would I want it to say?”
  • “The biggest frustration I’ve had with this space is… and what I really need instead is…”
  • “When this transformation is complete, I imagine myself…”
  • “What would make me smile every time I walked in here?”

There’s no right or wrong answer. The goal is to tap into your own inner wisdom in whatever way works. You already know what you need; sometimes it just takes a quiet moment to hear it.

Finding Your Own Style

I’ve tried a lot of systems and approaches over the years, and nothing has provided the long-lasting results I wanted quite like the Clutterbug system.

This system is a bedrock for this program. I first introduced the natural patterns in The Domestic Angel Philosophy - Part 3.

But now it’s time to discover you!

Your Clutterbug profile identifies the type of systems you’ll maintain naturally, so we can build your home around your tendencies rather than trying to fight them. This is honestly the secret to organisation that lasts. We’re not forcing you into someone else’s system; we’re uncovering what works for you.

In the resources section for this week, you will find an inspiring ebook and quiz that will help you identify your main organisational style.

Once we know the style that suits you best, the real fun begins.

FAQs

“What if I don’t connect with any of the Clutterbug styles?”

This happens sometimes, and it’s find. The quiz gives you a starting point, not a rigid box. Many people find they’re a blend of two styles, or that they lean one way in certain spaces and another way elsewhere (for example, more visual in the kitchen but more hidden in the bedroom).

When we chat during our check-in call, we can explore this together. The goal is understanding your tendencies and working with them, not fitting you into a category that doesn’t feel right.

“What if my partner or family members have a different style?”

This is actually very common! Different styles can coexist in the same home. The key is creating shared spaces that honour both tendencies, and personal spaces that are tailored to each individual.

For example, if you prefer hidden storage but your partner needs to see things to remember them, you might use clear containers inside closed cupboards - the best of both worlds.

We can talk through any specific challenges like this during our call.

“I’m not much of a journaler. Do I really have to write?”

Not al all. You don’t have to do anything that doesn’t feel good for you.

It’s still a good idea to spend some time in contemplation for the space each day. So feel free to try these alternatives:

  • Voice memos: Talk through the prompts out loud and record yourself
  • Pinterest or image collecting: Create a board of spaces that feel like what you’re going for
  • Simple contemplation: Sit with your eyes closed and think over the prompts.

The most important thing is taking some quiet time each day to connect with your vision. How you do it is entirely up to you.

“I did the quiz but I’m still not sure what it means for my space”

That’s what our check-in call is for! Bring your results and any questions, and we’ll work through what it means practically for your specific room and your specific life. The quiz is just the beginning of the conversation - not the end.

I'm keen to discover your personal style and vision. I look forward to catching up soon!
