The Truth About Organisation

5 min read

In Part 1 and Part 2, we talked about keeping the four pillars separate and why decluttering must come first.

Now it’s time to talk about what comes next: organisation.

And where most people get it wrong.

The Mistake We All Make

For years, I tried to organise my home using methods that looked perfect in magazines and on Pinterest. Filing systems with precisely labelled categories. Containers sorted by size and type. Everything in its exact place with detailed subdivisions - like Marie Kondo’s perfectly folded drawers or those beautiful spice racks where every jar has its designated spot.

It should have worked. These systems work for other people. Why not me?

Within weeks, everything would fall apart. I could not maintain it. The whole system would be abandoned.

I thought I was the problem. That I was just naturally messy or undisciplined.

Then I discovered something that changed everything.

Meet the Queen of Organisation

Over the years, I’ve tried many methods for organisation, but none has been as life-changing as what I learned from Cassandra Aarssen (yes, Cass from Clutterbug).

I’m not exaggerating when I call her the Queen of Organisation.

I completed her courses a few years ago, and her system is the foundation of everything I focus on with clients. Why? Because it works. Not for a single type of person, but for everyone.

What Makes This System Different

Here’s what Cass figured out that revolutionised organisation: there isn’t one right way to organise.

The system that works beautifully for your neighbour might be a disaster for you. And that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong - it just means you have a different style.

Cass defines organisation along two key spectrums:

Visual vs. Hidden

  • Do you need to see your things to remember they exist? (Visual)
  • Or do you prefer everything tucked away behind closed doors? (Hidden)

Macro vs. Micro

  • Do you like simple, broad categories with minimal sorting? (Macro)
  • Or do you prefer detailed categorisation and precise placement? (Micro)

This creates four distinct organising styles:

  • Butterfly (Visual/Macro)
  • Ladybug (Hidden/Macro)
  • Bee (Visual/Micro)
  • Cricket (Hidden/Micro)

When I discovered I was a Ladybug (hidden/macro), everything clicked into place.

Those beautiful open shelving systems that worked for other people? They stressed me out. I need things hidden.

Those perfectly sorted, labelled containers? Too much maintenance for my macro brain. I need broad categories.

Once I understood my natural style and what worked with my habits, I finally had peace in my home and my life.

What Organisation Actually Is

Organisation is finding everything you own a home that works within your natural style.

Not someone else’s style. Not what looks good in a magazine. Not what your mother or your friend uses.

Your style. Your habits. Your life.

This is why so many organising systems fail. They’re designed for someone else’s brain, not yours.

Why Organisation Matters

Organisation delivers benefits that extend far beyond tidy shelves.

Reduces Decision Fatigue and Stress

When everything has a designated home, you stop wasting mental energy on “where should this go?” and “where is it?” decisions. No more frantic searching. No more being late because you can’t find your keys.

Your brain knows exactly where things belong, freeing up mental bandwidth for what actually matters.

Saves Time and Supports Your Natural Habits

Daily tasks become effortless when your kitchen is organised, your closet makes sense, and everything has its place. These saved minutes add up to hours over a year.

And when you organise according to your style, you’re working with your natural tendencies instead of fighting them. The system supports who you actually are.

Creates Sustainable Systems That Last

Organisation that matches your style isn’t maintained through willpower - it’s easy, natural, and effortless. These systems last because they work with your brain, not against it.

Once in place, tidying takes minutes and finding what you need is automatic. Organisation becomes the foundation that makes everything else run smoothly.

The Missing Piece

Here’s what happens time and time again:

People will spend a lot of time trying to organise using a system that worked for someone else. They buy matching baskets from Instagram. They create elaborate filing systems because productivity experts say to. They install open shelving because it looks beautiful in magazines.

And then they wonder why it doesn’t stick.

You can’t organise effectively if you don’t understand your natural style first.

This is why, in my four-week transformation program, Week 2 incorporates discovering your style. Not jumping straight to organising, but taking the time to understand how your brain works.

Because when you know your style, you know what you need to bring in.

The Takeaway

There is no one “right” way to organise. There’s only the way that works for you.

Find your organising style, honour it, and watch how much easier everything becomes.
