Have you ever stood in the middle of your home, looked around at the chaos, and thought “I need to sort this out” - only to feel completely frozen about where to begin?
So you dive in with the best intentions. You’re start decluttering that drawer while simultaneously cleaning the surfaces, organising the pantry, and tiding up the papers that have been sitting there for weeks.
Three hours later, you’re exhausted, surrounded by half-finished projects, and somehow your space feels more chaotic than when you started.
If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something important: You’re not doing anything wrong.
In fact, you’re doing exactly what many people do. And it’s the very thing that’s keeping you stuck.
The One Simple Mistake
Over the years, I’ve noticed a pattern. People who struggle the most with maintaining an organised, peaceful home tend to make the same mistake.
They try to do too much at once.
They’re decluttering and cleaning and tidying and organising all at the same time!
And honestly? This approach makes perfect sense. It’s natural to want to get everything done. When you’re motivated and ready to tackle your space, why wouldn’t you do it all?
But here’s what I’ve learned: trying to tackle everything simultaneously is actually what’s holding you back from the lasting transformation you’re seeking.
There’s a much more effective way, and it starts with understanding four simple definitions.
The Four Pillars of Home Harmony
Think of your home maintenance as four distinct tasks. Each one has its own purpose, its own timing, and its own energy. When we try to blend them together, we dilute their power. But when we keep them separate and sequential, magic happens.
Decluttering
This is simply the act of letting go of what no longer serves you. Nothing more, nothing less.
If your space is bursting at the seams, this is where we begin. We dig deep, we get honest, and we make space for what truly matters.
But - and this is crucial - we don’t do anything else during this phase. We’re not organising or cleaning or even tidying. We’re simply making space before we allow anything new to come.
Organising
This is the art of finding everything you own the perfect home, and creating systems that work for your lifestyle.
During this phase, you just ensure every item has its ideal place to live.
That’s all. That’s what organising is all about.
Tidying
This is the act of returning items who have migrated back to their homes.
Here’s the beautiful thing: tidying only works when you have an organisation system in place.
It’s a regular maintenance task, and ideally, it should take no more than 10 or 15 minutes a day to put your entire home back together. That’s all it should ever take!
Cleaning
This is the act of removing dirt and grime from a space. In other words, the washing, vacuuming, scrubbing, and saying goodbye to germs.
It’s essential, of course, but it’s a thousand times easier after the other home management tasks have been done.
It’s only exhausting if you’re trying to clean when theres too much stuff, and nothing has a home.
Why Separation Creates Success
You might be wondering: Why does it matter if I do these things at the same time?
Here’s what I’ve discovered:
The secret to lasting success in home management is keeping these tasks highly distinct.
When we try to mix them - organising while decluttering, or cleaning when what’s really needed is tidying - our results get mixed. We end up overwhelmed, spinning our wheels, and never quite achieving the peaceful home we’re dreaming of.
I’ve found that the key is understanding the purpose of each activity and keeping them separate.
So when you declutter, you only declutter. When you clean, you only clean.
The Natural Order of Things
There’s a beautiful flow to this system. Each activity naturally serves the next:
- It’s hard to organise (create lasting homes for things) when you still have too much stuff for the space
- It’s hard to keep things tidy when your organisation system doesn’t work (or maybe doesn’t even exist)
- And it’s harder to clean when things haven’t found their way back home
This is why, with the Domestic Angel System, we start from the bottom up.
Decluttering is always the first step.
Once we’ve decluttered, and organised a space - you’ll be amazed at how much easier your day-to-day life becomes. Tidying will take minutes. Cleaning will feel effortless, and your home will finally feel like the sanctuary you’ve always wanted it to be.
Your Journey Begins Here
This philosophy isn’t just theory. It’s the foundation of every transformation I guide, and it works because it honors the natural rhythm of creating an organised life.
In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more about each of these pillars - how to approach them, what to expect, and how to make them work beautifully in your own life.
For now, I invite you to simply notice: Which of these four tasks do you tend to blend together? Where might separating them create more ease and flow in your home?
Remember, creating a harmonious home isn’t about doing everything perfectly or all at once. It’s about understanding what needs to happen, in what order, and giving yourself permission to take it one step at a time.
Your transformation journey starts with this one simple shift in the mind. And I promise you, it changes everything.
